Why is Valentine’s Day celebrated today?

February 14 is known as St. Valentine’s Day. Clearly, it is in commemoration of a biblical character. But who was St. Valentine?

Although many facts about his life have not yet been confirmed, it is known that he was dedicated to marrying couples. At this time, marriages were against the laws, so St. Valentine kept his practice secret. As a result of this he was imprisoned.

It is also believed that, during his time in prison, the saint freed the jailer’s daughter from blindness. St. Valentine was subsequently executed, and his remains lie in the Basilica di San Valentino. Every February 14 couples go there with a promise to marry the following year. This practice gave birth to Valentine’s Day.
