Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and a city with an enviable atmosphere. Erasmus students who decide to enjoy their experience in the Portuguese city always tell wonderful things about it, as is the case of our student Raquel (you can see Raquel’s experience on our Instagram). If you want to enjoy the experience like her, keep reading to discover the best student neighbourhoods in Lisbon.

The Portuguese capital offers an amazing weather, nearby beaches and a very active nightlife. What student wouldn’t want to spend a few months in Lisbon?

These are its best and most popular student neighbourhoods:

1. Bairro Alto

Bairro Alto is the most famous neighbourhood among university students. This neighbourhood offers leisure options any day of the week, in addition to its quaint clothes and tattoo shops, or its extravagant bars, which are becoming increasingly fashionable. Living in this neighbourhood is not particularly cheap. A room in a shared flat can cost from 300 to 550 euros, depending on its size and features. However, it is well worth the money to get the full Erasmus experience.

2. Benfica

The Lisbon neighbourhood of Benfica is famous for its football team, Sport Lisboa Benfica, and its stadium, Estádio da Luz. Although it is outside the city centre, it offers the advantage of good accommodations at very affordable prices.

It is home to one of the largest green areas in Lisbon, the Monsanto Forest Park. It is also home to some higher education centres, such as the Higher School of Education and the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon.

3. Arroios

The neighbourhood of Arroios was named in 2019 as the coolest neighbourhood in the world by Time Out magazine. In recent years it has become one of the most alternative neighbourhoods in the city. Its multicultural atmosphere, but without being located in the city centre, makes it much cheaper and more attractive for students. In this neighbourhood you can find a room in a shared flat from 300 euros.

4. Alameda

Alameda is another of Lisbon’s neighbourhoods that has been gaining prominence in recent years. The neighbourhood is built around the wide Alameda Alfonso Enriques. This avenue has a wonderful green area that gives it a lively atmosphere and invites students to spend time outdoors enjoying Lisbon’s great weather. In addition, Alameda also has amazing viewpoints to enjoy the views of the Tagus River. It’s a great neighbourhood for students of the Higher Technical Institute and rooms are around 350 euros per month.

We are convinced that by staying in any of the neighbourhoods we recommend, your experience in Lisbon will be more than amazing.
