The neighbourhood of La Latina is one of the oldest and most vibrant in the city. Built originally on an islamic fort, this area has a wealth of history. Its narrow streets are flooded with things to do, from trying the authentic tapas on Calle Cava Baja to admiring the beautiful old architecture of the Basilica de San Francisco El Grande, you will never get bored of this bustling neighbourhood. Below we have listed some of the best things to do in La Latina.

Soak up some of La Latina’s rich history

It only seems natural that a neighbourhood as old as this one would have some amazing historical sites to see, but which ones are worth a visit?

Iglesia de San Andrés

This 17th Century church is a staple of the La Latina neighbourhood. Inside you will be stunned by the extravagant architecture and stained-glass dome. It is also home to the tomb of Madrid’s patron saint – San Isidro Labrador. This stunning church should be a point on everyone’s itinerary and is a great way to soak up some of Madrid’s rich history.

Basílica de San Francisco el Grande

As opposed to the quant Iglesia de San Andres, expect nothing but extravagance from this Basilica. You can see the huge dome from miles away since it is the largest in Spain and the fourth largest in Europe. Inside, you will be amazed by its luxurious decoration and its impressive art pieces – most famously the works of Goya amongst others.

El Rastro Market

You didn’t think we were just going to leave out one of Madrid’s staples now, did you? this market is one of the best ways to spend your Sunday mornings. You can browse the adorable stalls of Madrid’s most popular open-air flea market. From vintage clothing, food, antiques and tourist souvenirs, you are bound to find something you like. You can also veer off onto the side streets if you want to find the real hidden treasures. But, BE CAREFUL. El Rastro is also a popular location for pickpockets.

Enjoy some of the delicious local cuisine

The absolute best thing about Madrid is there is never a lack of delicious restaurants to try, whether that be in the centre or in unique districts like Malasaña and Lavapies. Luckily, in La Latina there is one street that we must recommend: Calle Brava Alta. This street is known for being the ‘foody’ street of Madrid and once you get there you will immediately know why. Every other spot on this street is a restaurant so you are guaranteed to find something great on this road!

La Musa Latina

This unique restaurant located in the centre of La Latina has a great atmosphere and a great menu to match! You will always find this restaurant bustling with people and the great staff will make you feel right at home. The menu offers a unique mix of authentic Spanish tapas but with a slight Asian influence. We would highly recommend the sharing tapas platter and the Japanese dumplings. With these prices you will not regret visiting this great restaurant!

El Viajero

This restaurant has so much to offer other than just its incredible menu. The views over the whole of La Latina are breath-taking where you will be able to admire the sites we talked about above. The Mediterranean menu has some great grilled meats, vegetable platters and some great cocktails and although the small plates may seem a little pricey it is worth it for the incredible sunset views.

Have a drink at one of La Latina’s bustling bars

In a neighbourhood as bustling as La Latina it only seems natural that is is also home to some of the best nightlife in the city. Here are some of the absolute musts:

Atenas

This popular roof terrace is located in a small park with great views. It has a chilled-out vibe and is one of the most popular places for some after-work drinks. You can enjoy a refreshing gin and tonic in the afternoon sun or at night you can enjoy its pumping music and lively atmosphere. This a great spot for anyone in La Latina.

Marula

This venue is one of the most exciting in Madrid since it serves a variety of things. For example, early in the week it is a venue for live music and later in the week it converts into a swanky bar de copas and nightclub. The funky music and great drinks make this place a hit with everyone. There is always an event on at the weekends and has some of the best up and coming DJs in the world. A definite must more music lovers in Madrid!

Vaova

During the day this place may just seem like your average furniture shop. But at night, it turns into one of the hottest bars in La Latina. Its African styled décor and comfy seats make this the perfect location for a late-night cocktail. The prices may seem higher than in other areas, the ambiance makes it worth the price.

La Latina is one of the best, most exciting neighbourhoods of Madrid and has a vibrant atmosphere to match! We hope that this guide has been useful for helping you navigate the bustling neighbourhood of La Latina.
